If it is a first time application for ILR, then the usual time frame is anytime from a few months to close to a year. Hence your 6 months wait, although not ideal for you, is about average for the ILR application.

The question you have to ask yourself is if your application is complex or the evidence you have provided could be interpreted in the wrong way. Those cases usually take alot longer to process.

My suggestion is to wait until about 8-9 months before starting to get worried, as any chasing up you do now will not be of any use. As long as you have been assured your application and passport is with the home office, then there is nothing you can do.

Also although you are of course welcome to call up the Home Office hotline every day to check, they will give you the same answer (as those are call center staff), and it is counter-productive; the more frivolous calls the home office have to answer, the less manpower they can allocate for processing applications.
